A section of Azimio coalition candidates in Taita Taveta have launched joint campaigns to rally support for flagbearer Raila Odinga.

Led by Jubilee deputy party leader Naomi Shaban and Taita Taveta Senator Jones Mwaruma, the leaders urged residents to vote for Azimio leaders in the upcoming polls.

This is a rare show of unity since there has been sibling rivalry among the leaders in the past, with a section of candidates protesting against proposed zoning.

Shaban said the rally was meant to bring unity among candidates and focus on increasing Raila’s vote basket.

“This is a unique rally that is purely meant to campaign for our presidential candidate and unite our aspirants.

"Residents are free to vote for any of the Azimio candidates,” the long-serving Taveta legislator said during a rally at Voi bus park on Friday.

She said such rallies will end sibling rivalry and strengthen the voters' confidence in the Azimio leader, further cautioning candidates against spreading hate.

During the rally, gubernatorial candidates Patience Nyange (Narc) and her ODM counterpart Tom Mwakwida shared a podium as a show of unity.

Nyange asked residents to keenly vet the long list of 13 governor hopefuls before making a choice. She said time is ripe for the devolved unit to be headed by a female boss.

“We have had two male governors in the last ten years. It is time we have a visionary female county boss,” the media personality cum politician said.

The incumbent, Granton Samboja who is vying on a Jubilee ticket however, did not attend the much hyped rally.

Samboja was separately campaigning at Mbololo in Voi constituency.

The governor has long been seen as the most preferred candidate in the coalition, a move that prompted other candidates to protest against any attempt to zone the region.

Mwaruma (ODM) and outgoing Sagala MCA Godwin Kilele (Jubilee) used the rally to woo residents to support their senatorial bid.

Kilele categorically asked voters to elect a senator from the coalition to enable Raila’s government to get a majority of seats in Senate.

“You have a choice between Mwaruma, former Wundanyi MP Thomas Mwadegu of Wiper, Stephen Odiaga of Muungano party and I. Do not go beyond those choices,” he said.

Mwaruma who is seeking a second term boasted of his good performance at the Senate in his first term.

He said he will continue fighting for land rights among other issues bedeviling residents.

Voi MP Jones Mlolwa who also attended the rally promised to capitalise on improving infrastructure in schools and ensuring equitable distribution of bursaries.

The Jubilee candidate is seeking his third term as a legislator.

He is banking on his past development projects that include upgrading of learning institutions, to capture another term.

Other aspirants who attended the rally include woman representative candidates led by former woman representative Joyce Lay (Jubilee), Catherine Mashame (ODM) and Getrude Shuwe (DAP-K).

They all promised to join hands in campaigning for the Azimio presidential candidate.
