You can't convict me in the court of public opinion, Sonko to Haji

Sonko's remarks came after the DPP said any leaders who have been impeached will have broken the law if allowed to vie for office.

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko now say the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has no right to convict him in the court of public opinion.

Speaking on Saturday, at his Salama Beach Resort in Kanamai, Kilifi, Sonko said that he has matters pending in court, touching on the same issue.

“All the things you (Haji) say about me are pending in court. And if you have more charges against me, then go to court. But you cannot sentence me before the court makes its judgment,” he said.

Sonko's remarks came after the DPP said any leaders who have been impeached will have broken the law if allowed to vie for office.

"It's not only Sonko but all leaders who have impeached by parliament must respect the law. It is also important for us to respect the laws that are in place. Someone who has been impeached in one county cannot go try luck in another," Haji said.

Chief Justice Martha Koome, who on Friday also weighed in on the debate said convicted and impeached political leaders will not be allowed to vie during the upcoming polls, unless a court reverses such impeachments.

"You remain impeached until that impeachment is lifted. When you are sentenced, you are sentenced until the sentence is set aside," she said on Spice FM.

Sonko on his part said the CJ's opinion as the leader of all judges in the country, is likely to influence the judges handling his cases.

“I respect DPP Haji and Chief Justice Martha Koome. But if they go wrong, we are free to correct them,” he said.

Sonko accused Haji of working hard to safeguard the interests of other people, a matter that Haji himself distanced himself from on Friday.

While launching the official website of Sisters for Justice, a human rights lobby group, at Mwandoni in Kisauni, Mombasa, Haji said he does not support any political camp.

“Do not be cheated by people who have failed in other places and now want to become your leader,” Haji told Kisauni residents.

“I am not in any camp. I am just telling you as DPP. The law must be followed and respected.”

Sonko said what the DPP is doing amounts to abuse of the powers of his office.

“I have been silent because of the respect I have for you. But you have crossed the line. You have followed me into my bedroom,” Sonko said.
