The ongoing registration of boda boda operators in Lamu will help fight terrorism, county commissioner Irungu Macharia has said.
He said security officers will be able to monitor and trace suspicious individuals posing as boda boda operators or passengers.
Lamu county has for years grappled with insecurity caused by constant raids by al Shabaab militants that have left hundreds dead.
Macharia said the registration targets at least 2,000 boda boda riders.
He spoke when he presided over the launch of the boda boda registration at the Huduma Centre in Lamu town on Tuesday.
The national government is undertaking a countrywide registration of boda boda operators in all 52 Huduma centres countrywide.
The drive is aimed at streamlining the boda boda subsector and promoting road safety and security for the operators and users of their services.
Macharia said the national government will provide a one-year free health cover to the first 200,000 riders through the NHIF.
The drive will take 60 days. Registration started on March 28 and will end on June 24 this year.
Lamu boda boda operator’s chairperson Abdalla Bakari called for thorough scrutiny to ensure only boda boda riders are registered.
“We are just concerned that not everybody who is going to Huduma Centre to register is a rider,” he said.
