Police in Kilifi are investigating an attack on the county assembly deputy Majority leader Sammy Ndago.

Regional criminal investigations officer Christopher Chesoli said yesterday that Ndago, who is the Shimo la Tewa MCA, had recorded a statement.

The MCA was on Tuesday waylaid by a mob of youths unhappy that he supported a motion to send home all county assembly casual workers on grounds they were hired fraudulently.

The youths are said to be targeting 16 MCAs who supported the motion for attack. Some, through social media platforms, have vowed to "deal with them (MCAs) for failing to stand with the casuals".

Ndago was attacked outside the county offices at the Kilifi Business Complex.

The motion to send home 1,500 casuals was tabled by Kayafungo MCA Alphonce Mwayaa and seconded by Kakuyuni MCA Nixon Mramba.

“The MCA came and reported that he was attacked and threatened by youth. He has recorded his statement and we have launched investigations,” Chesoli said.

Ndago blamed his attack on a section of MCAs. “I was on my way to meet the chief officer for Roads and Public Works after are fire that razed a number of business premises in Mtwapa town. Before I could go in his office some youths confronted me and demanded my head on orders from their bosses," he told reporters.

"Since the motion was passed, John Mwamusti (Kibarani) and his Sokoni counterpart Gilbert Peru have been criticising those who supported the motion. They are now inciting youths who purport to be in solidarity with the sacked casuals against the leaders."

He claimed one of the youths was driving Peru's car.

Mwamusti has denied involvement in the attack. “I did not incite anyone against those MCAs. I only opposed the motion,” he said.

Peru did not respond to either our calls or text messages.

Most of the youths have worked for the county since 2013.

“We have engaged the casuals and they know the plans we have for them. They should be patient and allow the county government to address the matter. They have a right to work but under the employment regulations,” Ndago said.

He blamed the previous regime for the high number of casuals.
