Education players in the Lamu county have expressed alarm over the increasing number of

boys leaving primary school for

casual labour in the Witu division.
Witu education officer James Akello said serious steps must be taken to keep boys in school.
Speaking in Witu town yesterday, Akello said boys’ attendance is low and is dwindling each day.
“The girls are doing so well and their education has improved by 70 per cent. It has taken much effort which has paid off. Now let’s do the same for boys who are obviously lost,” he said.
The official said the boys are becoming boda boda riders, mandazi sellers and bus conductors, among other jobs. Akello said some are doing drugs and committing crimes.
“They will soon become a thorn in our own flesh if we don’t look into what is ailing them,” the official said.
