A Malindi court yesterday postponed the inquest into the mysterious death of Nairobi businessman Jimmy Baburam while on holiday in Watamu. Baburam reportedly drowned on July 26 last year at the Medina Palms resort. Chief magistrate Charles Mbogo directed the police file be handed to the DPP for assessment.

The DPP is expected to study the evidence and give directions on whether to proceed with the inquest or close it. Mbogo set the inquest for mention on September 30. The inquest had come for a two-day hearing, but prosecuting counsel Mary Otulo said she was not ready to proceed. Fresh police investigations raised queries about the manner in which Baburam died. The DPP's decision may lead to two suspects being charged.
