Potential use of carbon financing in protecting mangrove and threats facing the mangroves are among issues raised during a forum in Diani.

The second international course on the mangrove ecosystem in the Western Indian Ocean region was held last week.

About 20 participants from across the world attended the course themed ‘Promoting Regional Capacity on Mangrove Ecology and Management in Western Indian Ocean Region'.

Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute official James Kairo said marine resources management and the use of spatial planning in integrated coastal area management were discussed.

Speaking in Diani on Thursday during the closure, he said the course aimed to enable professionals and institutions research, monitor and manage mangrove ecosystems.

WWF-Kenya conservation director,Jared Bosire emphasized the importance of mangrove in enhancing community livelihoods, climate regulation, and biodiversity conservation.
