More than 2,500 families have been displaced in Tana Delta subcounty after River Tana burst its banks and water swept away their homes.

This has also left 10 villages in the delta marooned and more than 1,000 acres of maize destroyed.

The submerged villages are Mwanja, Odole, Samicha, Andaraku, Soga and Huranani.

Area leaders visited the area yesterday to assess the situation.

Kipini MCA Musa Wario said more than 200 houses have been submerged.

“The few pastoralists who are still around are overwhelmed by the floods," he said in Handaraku village.

The MCA said three people died last week from cholera while 10 others are in hospital.

Tana River county protocol officer Hussein Galgalo blamed Kengen for the floods.

“Kengen should show corporate social responsibility by responding to such calamities, residents who suffer most do not have electricity," he said.

Residents have urged the county government and the Kenya Red Cross to offer humanitarian aid.
