BIG BROTHERS: Deputy President William Ruto and Jubilee candidate in the Malindi by-election Philip Charo greet supporters during a rally at Shella Baobab Beach in Malindi on February 16.

CAMPAIGNS for next Monday’s Malindi by-election will climax this week with Deputy President William Ruto and opposition chief Raila Odinga leading campaign rallies.

ODM secretary general Ababu Namwamba also will attend rallies for candidate Willy Mtengo.

The Office of the DP said Ruto will arrive in Malindi tomorrow, when he will campaign for Jubilee candidate Philip Charo until Friday.

Raila’s spokeman Dennis Onyango yesterday said he was to arrive last evening.

Kadu Asili leader Gunga Mwinga says he is out to block the two by propelling Reuben Katana to victory.

Mwinga on Sunday canvassed Msabaha for votes, saying he will ensure “the big guns do not run away with the Malindi seat”.

“We have been meeting the people to ensure they ignore calls by our big brothers and honour their own Coast party through voting for Katana,” the Kaloleni MP said.

Ruto’s presence will bolster Charo’s campaigns run by 23 Jubilee MPs.

Ganze and Kinango MPs Peter Shehe and Gonzi Rai combed Kakuyuni ward in door-to-door campaigns.

Rai said: “We cannot come here to support [Kilifi North] MP Gideon Mung’aro’s efforts to have Charo win for no reason.”

“MPs cannot leave their constituencies to pitch tent here for weeks just to mislead you. We know the benefits of working with the government.”

Jubilee-affiliated leaders have subdivided the constituency into ward clusters.

Magarini MP Harrison Kombe and nominated senator Mvita Kisasa led campaigns in Jilore.

Mung’aro and nominated Senator Emma Mbura campaigned in Ganda, while Zainab Chidzuga and Khatib Mashetani were in Shella.
