Newly appointed regional coordinator Nelson Marwa has ordered closure of the Export Processing Zone because of counterfeit goods.

He accused senior Kenya Revenue Authority and police officers of colluding with businessmen to divert goods from the port to privately owned container freight stations.

Marwa led a team of APs on Wednesday to raid the EPZ on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

They seized thousands of sacks of goods at the Miritini EPZ in Mombasa.

The officers impounded thousands of bags of rice imported from the United Arab Emirates.

The rice was being repackaged and labelled.

Marwa said some of the bags of sugar labelled Pakistan long grain white rice had expired and did not have the Kenya Bureau of Standard seals.

“We suspect some KRA officials are colluding with unscrupulous businessmen to siphon goods from the port,” Marwa said.

He said some senior police officers from Changamwe will be summoned to explain the cartels operating at the EPZ and go-downs.
