The Malindi Marine Park beach may be destroyed by seawater after Italian billionaire Flavio Briatore built a wall in front of his resort near the beach.

The wall has disrupted the natural flow of seawater during high tide.

The beach is the only one in Malindi.

More than 20 trees have been washed away by the currents and many more are about to fall.

Reports indicate the construction of the wall was approved by the National Environment Management Authority to stop the public from accessing the resort from the beach.

Boat operators now have limited space to park their vessels because of the high currents.

Kenya Wildlife Service official Joseph Kavi said the seashore is under threat.

He said the construction of the wall has destroyed the breeding ground of sea turtles, a major tourist attraction.

Turtles live in the ocean but breed offshore along the beach front.

Kavi said the number of visitors has dropped drastically. “Tourists have no space to walk on the beach as most of it has been grabbed by public developers,” he said.

Boat builder Said Hemed said high currents swept away three boats three weeks ago. He said during high tide, the water is diverted from the wall to the open space.

Hemed said their boatyard has been destroyed.

He said their offices may be swept away.
