CORD leader Raila Odinga has asked Coast MPs to reject the amendments to the land laws that seek to reduce the powers of the National Land Commission.
MPs are set to debate the Omnibus Amendment Bill, which incorporates the Land Adjudication Act, Land Registration Act and the National Land Commission Act.
Raila on Saturday said the bill, if passed, will lead to numerous land injustices, especially at the Coast.
He spoke at the burial of former Bahari MP Benedict Gunda in Kizingo, Kilifi county.
Raila urged Coast legislators to emulate Gunda on unity and fight for the success of devolution.
He said Gunda united the region’s lawmakers when he was the Coast Parliamentary Group chairman.
The Coast is the worst-hit in terms of historical land injustices committed before and after Independence, Raila said.
He said Kenyans decided to vote for the new constitution because they wanted land reforms to take place.
Before the promulgation of the new constitution all the powers concerning public and community land were vested in the Lands minister and the commissioner of Land, Raila said.
“During this time many land injustices took place, that is why the NLC was established,” he said.
Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said residents are keenly watching legislators.
He said they may not be re-elected in 2017 if they pass the bill.
Kingi urged MPs to scrutinise the Historical Land Injustices Bill and ensure it benefits residents.
