CARELESS use of viagra among youth and traditional beliefs are the lead cause of sexual offences in Kisauni district in Mombasa, a report released on Thursday has revealed.

The report on rape, drug abuse, defilement among other crimes was released by Kisimani community policing and the Sauti ya Wamama Kisauni chapter. The study was done over an 11-month period from December 2012 to October 2013.

Community policing chair Abdalla Abdulrahaman cited use of viagra amongst youth as the reason why many have been engaging in rape, sodomy and bestiality. “Sexual offenders always confess they had taken viagra before committing the crimes,” he said.

Viagra are drugs sold to men who have erectile dysfunction to improve their ability during sexual intercourse. However, according to the report, youths are driven by anxiety to buy these drugs and they end up raping young ones when they “miss their dates”.

He said when high on the drug, the do anything for sexual gratification, which explains why some engage in unnatural acts with animals. According to the report, Mshomoroni is leading with 14 per cent of the cases.

Bombolulu and Kisimani recorded 12 per cent each of the reported cases this year down from 17 per cent. Maweni and Kisauni have nine per cent each. Bamburi and Shanzu have six and four per cent cases respectively.

The community policing and the Sauti ya Wamama officers called for immediate action by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. They want the board to reign on chemists that sell viagra to the youths who are sexually active.

“Such drugs should only be sold when someone has a doctor’s prescription,” Abdulrahaman said. The report also quoted witchcraft and traditional healing as another reason why men commit sexual offences with minors.

Many are misled by traditional doctors that by sleeping with juveniles their problems will come to an end. “Culprits admit they have been advised that doing the act with juveniles will cure them of HIV/Aids infection or achieve good luck and wealth,” read part of the report.

Many cases have remained unreported and most of the perpetrators are trusted close family relatives and friends. The unreported incidents are because parents or affected families are ashamed of the incidents and fail to report.

Hence, the offenders go unpunished. Fathers, uncles, religious leaders and elder brothers are among the list of close perpetrators in sexual offences.
