THE office of a county representative aspirant in Sokoke, Kilifi was torched just hours to the party primaries.
Speaking to the press yesterday, Vitengeni district officer Vincent Kibaara said Albert Katana's office was set ablaze by unknown people at 2 am.
Kibaara said security in the area has been intensified following the incident and the police are looking for an aspirant who held a meeting with the youth near the office on Wednesday evening.
Katana was out of town when the event occured but speaking to the Star on phone, he said his office could have been burnt down by his political rivals.
He called on police and IEBC officials to investigate and ensure the culprits are brought to book. Katana is defending his seat on a Federal Party of Kenya ticket and has no opponent from the party.
He criticised his opponents for using crude means to scare his supporters. “I want my opponents to campaign in a civilised manner without resorting to crude means to intimidate others. We are in a democratic country and democracy shall prevail,” he said.
Human rights agenda program officer Eric Mgoja who is an observer in the primaries raised fears that if the trend is not managed violence may be experienced in the area as a group of youth are suspected to be planning revenge.
“This incident may bring violence if the provincial administration will not be careful in handling this issue. This is a violation of human rights and we should be told who held the rally at that officer hours before the office was burnt,” he said.
