The Council of Governors (COG) has hailed the growing number of female governors saying it is a major milestone and a sign that Kenya’s democracy is steadily appreciating the female gender.

Through its chief executive officer Mary Mwit,  COG lauded the 7 elected governors saying their courage in vying and successfully clinching the positions was no mean feat.

Speaking in Kirinyaga on Thursday after witnessing the swearing-in of governor Ann Waiguru and her deputy David Githanda, Mwiti particularly hailed Waiguru for being the only woman governor to secure a second term saying her resilience and courage are worth emulating.

The CEO further hailed the female second liberators like Grace Onyango, Phoebe Asiyo , and Professor Wangari Mathai among other female politicians for their tenacity and dedication in shedding the status quo.

She cited them as trailblazers who were instrumental in widening the leadership space for women.

Mwiti said the council of governors will remain committed to working closely with all governors in order to empower the devolved units.

On her part, Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru hailed Kirinyaga residents for breaking the gender partiality and entrusting women with various leadership positions.

She said this has continually set a good precedent for other Counties that are steadily breaking the chains of retrogressive and repugnant cultures and now embracing women's leadership.

She cited that by electing Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua as an MP for twenty consecutive years, the Gichugu electorate played a critical role in breaking the glass ceiling and clearing the way for more women leaders.

The county chief affirmed her commitment to continuing working with women seeking for leadership positions.

She said it will be an inspiring experience to share a platform with the other six female governors in the council even as she hoped that in the next cycle of elections, Kenyans will continue entrusting more women with the county top seats.

In the August 2022 elections, Waiguru's closest political rival was the outgoing woman rep Wangui Ngirici who managed 105,677 votes against Waiguru's 113,088.
