Zetech University has introduced 10 more undergraduate degrees.

Vice chancellor Njenga Munene said the programmes herald a new chapter, especially in technology, sociology and political science.

He said the courses are in keeping with the changing world, which is increasingly shaped by science and technology.

Munene said some of the skills now sought after are enterprise resource planning, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud computing, robotic process automation and cyber security.

Others are data science, blockchain technology, the internet of things, digital currencies and digital marketing and communications.

“This is why Zetech University has chosen to expand its programmes in those areas including journalism and media where there is a lot of convergence,” Munene said on Wednesday during the announcement.

“We appreciate the  Commission for University Education for working with us and approving the new programmes that are in line with our teaching and training plan.”

He said science, technology and innovation remain the foundation of the Kenya's Vision 2030.

Munene said universities have a mandate to build a pivotal human capital that will help realise the development blueprint.

He said there is also an urgent need for experts such as sociologists and psychologists.

“This is why Zetech has deliberately chosen to expand its programmes in those areas, including journalism and media, where there is a lot of convergence,” Munene said.

“Technology has played a pivotal role in hybrid and ODeL modes of study and supporting the platforms through which learners share information, collaborate and study remotely. Zetech has been a pace-setter in online learning and online exam administration.”

Munene said the open and distance learning approach has been flexible for students.

“We have an elaborate training programme for our faculty and students on how to access and use the online resources,” Munene said

He said most businesses are moving online, making the demand for digital competencies such as computer science, physics, mathematics, digital analytics and web development a necessity.

“Global organisations are relying on universities to produce skilled manpower that will satisfy the growing need for a tech-savvy workforce,” the vice chancellor said.

“We collaborate with industry experts such as Oracle, AfricaHackOn, Huawei, Cisco and Samchi Group.”

The programmes include Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Technology, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Technology, Bachelor of Journalism, Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science and Applied Physics, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Mathematics, Bachelor of Science in Media and Digital Communication and Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering.
