The search for people trapped in a Murang'a building that collapsed last Friday has been called off after two people who were missing have been traced.

County disaster manager Bilha Wanjiku on Monday said rescuers were looking for eight workers who were at the site until Stephen Musembi was located.

The other missing person, Benson Ndung’u, is also alive and is in his home in Kasarani, Nairobi County.

One person was on Sunday pulled out alive from the rubble.

Rescuers working at the site said the man, who was rushed to hospital, could speak and told them that two others were still trapped alive under the rubble.

Wanjiku said the rescued man, only identified as Victor, said one of his hands was in a lot of pain.

He gave his sister’s mobile phone number as he was being taken to Thika Level 5 hospital for treatment.

Wanjiku said Victor was saved after rescuers heard him calling for help from under the rubble.

“He must have heard the rescuers working on the rubble on top of him when he cried for help and they were able to get to him,” she said.

County commissioner Fred Ndunga said a multiagency rescue team was still working to rescue the two construction workers still trapped.

The building that was under construction collapsed at 2pm on Friday, trapping workers who were working on the topmost floor.
