Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has expressed optimism that residents will re-elect him and the majority of MCAs in next year's polls.

Kahiga, while delivering his fourth state of the county address on Wednesday, said his administration has a good development record.

The governor said his government has been rated the best in the country by several credible national and international institutions mandated to assess and monitor county governments.

He said the World Bank, through the Kenya Devolution Support Program, rated the county position one in the country. The Procurement Oversight Authority gave the county the highest trophy for 75 per cent compliance with the law, he said.

The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project also rated the county top in the country for two consecutive years.

“We all stand tall today as we look back at the milestones that we have achieved together. We did this purely for the betterment of our people. They gave us their trust by entrusting us with power and we have repaid back their trust,” the governor said.

Kahiga said his competitors will have to work hard to find fault in his work as they try to unseat him next year.

The county chief said his opponents will have to be very creative to criticise his development record.

“We have certainly not reached where we want to go, but we have made tremendous progress,” Kahiga said.

He lauded the Nyeri county staff for their commitment and cooperation with his administration.

His administration, Kahiga said, has laid out the necessary infrastructure and set up the best human capital for progress. He said his next focus will be the economic development of the people to enable them to achieve their aspirations of a healthy, wealthy and secure people.

He thanked the MCAs, whom he said have collaborated and worked harmoniously with the executive to have their achievements realised and have the county devoid of political wrangles.

“This is the legacy we have established and one whose credit goes to all elected leaders. I mention the honourable members of this house with special reverence. You have been key pillars in my government’s success,” he said.

“As we focus on re-election, we will face the electorate with confidence because we gave it our best shot. We were focused; we were committed and geared towards action. We delivered and we have results to show.”

He highlighted some of the achievements that his government has realised in health, education, infrastructural development, agriculture, public service and revenue collection increments.
