Inadequate road reserve and encroachment have slowed the Sh474.7 million Othaya township road project, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority has said.

Kura’s engineer in charge of the project Doreen Kirima yesterday said despite the challenges, the project is at 35 per cent complete. Work started last year in September.

“The project which is currently at 35 per cent progress, is a key enabler towards elevating Othaya town to a commercial hub,” she said.

The road network, which traverses across social and commercial zones, consists of six roads – Birithia Catholic Church-Gachame road, access to proposed KMTC road, Gatugi-Sewerage-Karima road, Kwa Ngechu-Gatugi shopping centre, Othaya Girls School access road and access road to Othaya level 6 and level 4 hospitals.

The works include upgrading of roads to bitumen standards, installation of drainage systems and provision of non-motorised transport.

The road upgrade in Othaya township marks a key step towards uplifting the status of urban centres and enhancing mobility.

According to Kura, the ongoing infrastructural development, set to be completed in September 2022, is aimed at improving connectivity and elevating the town's status into a commercial hub.

“Once complete, the roads that are constructed within Othaya township will greatly enable residents to access social amenities like schools, hospitals and market centres with ease," Kirima said.

The authority is constructing an additional road network totalling 13kms and implementing routine maintenance on the existing road network totalling over 30kms within Nyeri county.

The entire scope of work within the county is in line with the realisation of Vision 2030 and the attainment of the Big Four agenda.
