Clerics have asked President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to iron out their differences to avoid tearing the country apart as it heads to next year's general election.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya on Tuesday cautioned that the duo’s exchange of words might incite supporters as 2022 politics intensifies.

ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit asked Uhuru and Ruto to use the authorities of their offices to unite Kenyan’s instead of attacking each other openly.

Sapit said misunderstandings of the two worries Kenyans on the direction the country is heading.

“Each one of them has a following and their fighting may cause friction, which will have an impact on their following. It is good for them to stop engaging each other in personal politics” he said.

“The two are the symbol of national unity and they should always exercise the authority bestowed on them by Kenyans, to bring the country together not tear it apart.

He spoke at Jumuiya Conference and Country Home in Kiambu on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by NCCK secretary general Cannon Chris Kinyanjui and Kiambu Governor James Nyoro.

He spoke two days after Uhuru asked his deputy to resign and concentrate on his 2022 election campaign, instead of fighting the government from within.

However, Ruto on Tuesday vowed that he will not quit the government he jointly formed with Uhuru.

Kinyanjui said the church will always stand firm in advising the government and speaking when issues get out of hand.

Nyoro asked people to concentrate on issues affecting them.
