Davis & Shirtliff Limited will instal solar power to the 16 boreholes sunk by the county government within six months.

This was revealed on Friday during a meeting between Governor Mutahi Kahiga and a team from the company, led by Nyeri branch manager Anthony Ndung’u.

Company officials had paid a courtesy call to the governor.

“Solar power is the best option since it is clean energy, cheap to generate and maintain,” Kahiga said.

Ndung’u said the project will be completed by March next year.

The drilling of the 16 boreholes in Kieni and Mathira is complete. Mathira got three boreholes while the rest were drilled in the arid and semi-arid areas of Kieni.

The project was undertaken by the county government in partnership with the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation.

While launching the drilling of the boreholes in July last year, Kahiga said the entire project is expected to cost the county government in excess of Sh50 million.

The project brings the total number of public boreholes in the county to 22.
