Many Nyeri mothers abandon their children out of fear and carelessness.

Gabriel Nderitu, manager of New Life Home Trust, said at least five children are abandoned every month. He said some of the children die from exposure.

Nderitu was speaking during the annual charity Save a Life Walk on Sunday in Nyeri town. He said the children, aged between three weeks to two years, are taken to children’s home.

Nderitu blamed media, saying since teenagers imitate what they are exposed to and get pregnant.

He urged parents and church leaders to counsel and encourage young mothers to raise their children.

More than 300 primary and secondary school, college and university from Nyeri county took part in the six kilometre walk. The walk aimed to raise Sh2 million.

The money will be used to expand New Life Home Trust to accommodate more children. "Some come from as far as Moyale," Nderitu said.

The home has 20 abandoned children and relies on well-wishers.
