THE Athi Water Services Board has dismissed claims the Northern Collector Tunnel will reduce water levels in Murang’a county rivers.

Chairman Mwangi Kiunjuri said the collector was approved by the Cabinet and Treasury.

He said the county cannot undertake a project that would hurt residents.

The former Laikipia East MP said the tunnel will channel water to Ndakaini Dam to boost supply in Nairobi.

Kiunjuri said the board will spend Sh2.6 billion to implement county water projects.

He spoke when he visited Governor Mwangi Wairia’s office in Murang’a town on Tuesday. Kiunjuri said studies show water levels of Gikigie, Irati and Maragua rivers will not be affected.

He asked leaders to support the project to promote development.

Kiunjuri urged resident Joseph Kuria to withdraw a lawsuit he filed in court against the project.

“The board will conduct education meetings on the project,” he said.
