Markets in Kiambu county will be upgraded, Trade executive Samuel Otieno has said.

He said the World Bank under the Nairobi Metropolitan Programme will facilitate the modernisation of markets in Kiambu.

Speaking on Tuesday in his Thika office,

Otieno said data has been gathered on the facilities and their users as required by World Bank.

The markets to be upgraded are Ruiru, Juja, Madaraka in Thika, Githurai and Limuru.

Otieno said the amount of money allocated to each market will depend on its size and population.

“Though we have no specified time when the projects will begin, we are sure the markets will be upgraded," he said.

Otieno said the World Bank will build storey markets, repair roofs and floors, install lights and fence them.

He urged traders to be patient as their problems will be resolved.

On Monday, Ruiru traders said that with the onset of the rains they risk losing their property as there are no shades in the market.

They said it has taken the county government a long time to solve the issue.

“We incur huge losses due to lack of convenient shades in the market especially when the sun is too hot; and now that it is about to rain we fear losing more,” said James Waweru, the market chairman.
