A US-based foundation has donated carpentry equipment to a youth polytechnic in Murang’a East subcounty.

Gaitega Youth Polytechnic manager Martha Njeri said Can Do Kids Foundation donated sanders, drills and circular saws.

She said students from the institution will make furniture and sell it to neighbouring schools.

Njeri said the project will help the institution supplement the money it receives from the government.

Speaking when officials from the foundation visited the polytechnic on Wednesday, she said the project will assist the institution to sustain itself as most students come from poor families.

Njeri said out of the five instructors they have, only one is employed by the government.

“Our students are getting exposure by working with state-of-the-art equipment. We are looking for orders to generate more income,” she said.

Jamleck Karanja, a member of the foundation who works in the US, said it started projects in the country in 2011.
