More than 100 leaders from Mulembe nation will this weekend meet in Kakamega to chart the political way forward for the community.

Western Key Opinion Leaders council spokesman and Obulala Movement chairman Richard Ekhalie said the conference will seek to enhance Mulembe nation’s chances of winning the presidency through a well-thought-out unity of purpose strategy.

“Wekol leaders will converge in Kakamega to launch a roadmap for the populous Luhya community in regard to the forthcoming 2022 General Election,” he told the Star on the phone on Tuesday.

The leaders will be drawn from 50 constituencies. They include Kakamega (12), Bungoma (9), Busia (7), Vihiga (5), Trans Nzoia (5), Nairobi (7), Coast (3) and Nakuru (2).

He said the forum is a follow-up to the first one that took place in the same town on August 20.

"A yellow card was issued to three key Mulembe presidential aspirants for lowering Mulembe nation’s realistic chances of bagging the 2022 presidency through their divisiveness and lack of a winning strategy,” Ekhalie said.

He said the conference will also approve irreducible minimums – socioeconomic and political – that the region will demand out of any partnerships with other blocs at the national level.

Ekhalie said delegates, irrespective of party affiliations, will also seek to settle on the best presidential candidate who stands the best chance of bagging the seat.

He said the leading contenders include ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya's Moses Wetang'ula and former UNCTAD secretary-general  Mukhisa Kituyi.

Ekhalie said the initiative will help forge a working partnership that can inspire confidence among Luhya voters and seek win-win partnerships with other political formations countrywide.
