The Kenya Literature Bureau will train Early Childhood Development and Education teachers in Kakamega on the effective delivery of the competency-based curriculum.

They will also train technical and vocational tutors, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has said.

Oparanya said the county government has an MoU with KLB to publish branded teaching and learning materials for ECDE and county polytechnics.

On Monday, he distributed textbooks and teachers’ guides as well as exercise books worth Sh34.4 million at Bukhungu stadium.

Oparanya said enrolment in ECDE centres has risen steadily from slightly over 3,000 in 2013 to 112,000 this year.

“This achievement has been realised through the expenditure of over Sh2 billion on the establishment of learning facilities in ECDE centres and workshops in county polytechnics,” Oparanya said.

He said the county government has also invested Sh860 million in building facilities and infrastructure in primary and secondary schools.

“All these are worthwhile investments to enable our young people to not only excel in academics but also acquire life-long skills to help them become economically independent through self-employment,” he said.

He said Kakamega leaders have expressed concern over poor performance in KCSE examinations, adding that the leaders are of the view that the national and county governments should consult on the way forward.

Oparanya said policies on management of secondary schools such as delocalisation should be well thought out before they are implemented to avoid disrupting education.
