Diani Reef Beach Resort and Spa yesterday announced the reduction of its charges by 25 per cent till December 20.

The new charges, that will be effective from October 20, will only apply to those who have travelled via SGR.

Twin room will now go for Sh10,910 while singles will cost Sh19,410 for a minimum of two nights.

The hostel is partnering with Madaraka Express to promote tourism at the South Coast.

The hotel's Managing Director Bobby Kamani, in a press release, said the move will revive the sector that faces political threat.

"We believe that the SGR infrastructure now provides an additional impetus to the tourism sector especially for the domestic tourists who are visiting the coast region," he said. Kamani said the discounted rate will trigger visits to South Coast. "The SGR will boost transport accessibility by even complimenting the almost accomplished Dongo-Kundu bypass that will open up tourism in South Coast," he said. The Dongo-Kundu bypass will be completed in the first quarter of 2018, according to government estimates.

The road is expected to ease the Likoni-ferrry traffic that has been a nightmare to those crossing to South Coast.

Kamani said they introduced a saving plan for domestic tourists in February, dubbed "Easy Pay Plan".

The initiative allows domestic tourists to choose a package with the hotel and save up for it over time before disembarking on the journey.

"The initiative will complement the Diani Reef train package and allow more local tourists to enjoy the various offerings," he said.

Kamani also called for the quick expansion of the Ukunda Airport to allow more airlines to visit the region.

“It is also important that we continue having more direct flights from international destinations with affordable airfares," he said.

He noted that Kenya Airways approval to fly directly to the US was a major boost to the tourism sector.

"As we speak, Jetways has introduced direct flights to Diani increasing traffic to South Coast,” he said.
