Car-leasing company Vehicle And Equipment Leasing Ltd plans to launch a tractor distribution scheme in East Africa in partnership with Tata Kenya.

Regional managing director Paul Njeru said the firm will avail 1,000 tractors to farmers in various parts of the country.

Speaking during a farmers meeting in Narok Town on Saturday, Njeru said VAELL will also roll out the project in Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

He said VAELL has already picked partners from South Africa, Brazil and India to participate in the project with Tata Kenya, having so far contributed more than 25 John Deere tractors.

"VAELL has committed Sh1 billion toward agricultural mechanisation over the next five years, we have also gotten investors who are willing to invest over US $1 billion (Sh100 billion) across the Africa network," Njeru said.

He said Africa needs high-quality machinery and appropriate technology to improve production.
