More than 12 commercial buildings are under construction in Eldoret, developments that will most likely improve the face of the town.

The upcoming buildings all have more than 14 storeys, dwarfing Kerio Valley Development Authority’s building which is currently Eldoret’s tallest with 14 floors.

The high number of new commercial buildings has been caused by rising demand for quality office space, malls and colleges.

“We are seeing many investors putting up such buildings because Eldoret is now recording quick growth with new businesses coming up in all parts of the town,” said Uasin Gishu county executive for housing and land Robert Ngisirey.

County records indicate that all the upcoming buildings have been duly registered and approved.

The tallest among the 12 highrise buildings will have 26 floors and is being constructed by Moi University Pension Scheme.

The Sh2.4 billion twin-tower will be known as the Moi University Pension Scheme Complex and will have a parking space for more than 400 cars.

The scheme manager Charles Nyamieno said the building will provide the best business environment for the town.

“It will change the face of Eldoret completely. It will be a modern building that will stand the test of time for many years,” Nyamieno said.

The building will provide 50,000 square metres of space out of which 30,000 will be sold to the public.

It is located near the Eldoret Hospital on the Nairobi Road.

“It will be a one-stop complex for all kinds of businesses and offices,” Nyamieno said.

Governor Jackson Mandago said developers are also putting up supermarkets and banking facilities in areas on the outskirts of Eldoret and that the move will also spur expansion of the town.

“It will help to ease congestion in Eldoret’s CBD and also open up quick expansion of the town,” said Mandago after he officially opened a new branch of retailer Khetia’s Supermarket at Tairi Mbili along the Eldoret-Kitale road.

He said construction of malls outside the town centre will provide new frontiers for growth of Eldoret that has a lot of land for expansion. A new mall is being constructed near the Eldoret International Airport.
