Kenya pip Burundi to Billie Jean King Cup host rights

The winner will be promoted to the Billy Jean King Cup Europe /Africa Group II tournament in 2025.

Kenya will host the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III for the second consecutive year after pipping Burundi during the bidding process.

Team Kenya will seek to win the tournament in June after settling for bronze at the Nairobi Club last year.

Morocco won the gold medal to gain promotion to Group 2 with Tunisia settling for silver.

Kenya and Burundi were the only countries to bid for the tournament to be staged from June 10.

The winner will be promoted to the Billy Jean King Cup Europe /Africa Group II tournament in 2025.

Tennis Kenya secretary general Wanjiru Mbugua Karani said: “We are thrilled to host the Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III event. This is a great opportunity to showcase our country's hospitality and tourism and potential for the sport of tennis. We are confident we will deliver a successful tournament and give players and fans a memorable experience."

She wants the Government of Kenya and sponsors to support them in delivering a world-class event.

Team Kenya will bank on African Games tennis champion Angela Okutoyi, her twin sister — Rosehilda Asumwa, Alicia Owegi, Cynthia Cheruto, Zimbabwe-based Melissa Mwakha and Stacy Yego.

Head coach Francis Rogoi said they will go for nothing short of promotion.

"We finished third last year but we are relishing the battle to win it on home soil. The form our girls showed at the Africa Games and other recent tournaments is commendable. We hope to carry the momentum, into the tournament" observed Rogoi 

12 nations will grace the tournament; Botswana, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

The teams will be split into three pools of four with the top four sides meeting in the semifinals.
