Okutoyi romps to semifinals of Africa Junior championship

Top seed and defending champion Angela Okutoyi made light work of Benin's Gloria Nahum 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals of the Africa Junior Championship in Sousse, Tunisia.

The country's youngest Kenya Open champion was in devastating form from the first serve, breaking her opponent with ease and racing to a 4-0 lead in the first set.

Nahum settled and recovered to win the fifth game in the set but Okutoyi moved to the match point by winning the sixth game  5-1. Currently ranked 43 in the junior rankings, Okutoyi closed out the first set.

Okutoyi's coach Thuku Rogoi said they are taking it one game at a time as they step up in preparation for the junior event at the second Grand Slam of the year,  French Open in May.

"I'm happy with the progress we have made so far in this tournament. Let us hope we can make the final and build confidence in her as we prepare for the Grand Slam,” said Rogoi. 

Rogoi is keen to improve her all-around game and ensure she is in peak condition by the time the French Open starts.

“ We are ticking the boxes nicely and I want to ensure that come May, she will be in good shape to go on a good run in Paris,” added Rogoi.
