Tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi's grandmother says she can't wait to see her once again when she returns from North Africa where she has been participating in a series of tournaments to prepare for the French Open in May.

Mary Omukuya Ndong'a says she wants to give her granddaughter the welcome she deserves for all the hard work the 18-year-old has put into her craft.

"Last time she came back from the Australian Open, there was a huge party for her as everyone celebrated her achievements. This time, I am looking forward to seeing her...I will welcome her in my own special way because it has been a while since I last saw her. Ingokho (chicken) is a must," Omukuya said amid laughter.

In several interviews, Okutoyi has always credited her grandmother as an important pillar of strength in her career, having cared for her and the twin sister — Roselida Asumwa — ever since they were young.

Omukuya said Okutoyi's rise to stardom does not surprise her since she was always a hardworking and passionate sportsperson for the longest time.

"Their mother, who was my daughter, died when she was undergoing an operation. What I like about her is that she is hardworking and very disciplined. She is always ready to listen to advice and that's why she has come really far in tennis. Rozzie (Roselida) is also not far behind and we pray that she will soon enjoy success in the sport," she said.

Omukuya added: "I always tell her not to lose hope no matter the setbacks she encounters. Furthermore, I advise her not to forget to pray before she enters the court and to ask God to strengthen her while in competition or training."

She was speaking on Thursday after receiving the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month for January on behalf of her granddaughter.

She thanked the electronics giant and the sports scribes body for honouring Okutoyi's hard work.

"We are all very happy for Angela...to see that she has been rewarded for her hard work. It is because of her that we are now in the limelight...being interviewed by the media. We pray that she continues to succeed and will always provide her with the support she needs," Omukuya said.

Omukuya also encouraged other grandmothers or guardians taking care of orphans not to give up but to trust in God.

"It is never easy, I know. It is a huge responsibility but just encourage your children to embrace their talent and support them all the way," she said.
