Kenyan schools turn focus on East Africa showpiece in Rwanda

The East Africa Games will be held in Huye, Rwanda from August 19-29

Following the successful conclusion of the Kenya secondary schools term two games, Kenyan teams have now turned their focus on the East Africa Secondary Schools games next week. 

The East Africa Games will be held in Huye, Rwanda from August 19-29. Kenya’s teams are camping in Kakamega and will depart for Rwanda on Wednesday.

The draws for the regional games were held on Saturday in Kampala, Uganda. In the draws, Kenya’s soccer defending champions St Anthony’s Kitale were handed a tough draw in Pool ‘A’ which also features Tanzania’s Kalangalala, Amus College, and St. Henry’s College Kitovu from Uganda, CGFK from Rwanda, and Kenya’s other representatives Shanderema.

In pool ‘B’ Kenya’s Dagoretti faces a herculean task against Uganda’s defending champions St Mary’s Kitende and Kibuli Senior School. Other teams in the pool are Kiwira Coal Mine from Tanzania and Rwanda’s Ecose Musambira.

In the girls’ category, Pool ‘A’ has Kenya’s Butere Girls and Madira; Rwanda’s GS Gatizo, Uganda’s  Kawempe Muslim and St Noa Girls, and  Tanzania’s Ziba.

Former girls' football champions Wiyeta Girls will be keen to reclaim their title. However, they will have to overcome Fountain Gate (Tanzania), Sacred Heart Gulu (Uganda), Amus College School (Uganda), and Apaer (Rwanda).

The rugby  Sevens draw will be done at the venue while rugby 15’s will be played on a round-robin basis. Rugby 7’s will feature Kenya’s defending champions Koyonzo alongside compatriots Vihiga Boys, St Mary’s School and Kitondo. Other schools are Uganda’s Jinja Senior School, Kiira College, London College, and Makerere College.

Butula Boys will lead Kenya’s hunt for the 15’s title alongside All Saints, and St Anthony’s Kitale. Uganda will be represented by champions Namilyango College, Kinga College Buddo, and St. Mary's College Kisubi.

Girls’ hockey will also be played on a round-robin basis and will feature  St Mary’s Namagunga (Uganda), Kakungulu Memorial, Gayanza High, and Bweranyangi Girls (Uganda) while Kenya will be represented by Nyamira Girls, St Joseph’s Kitale and Tigoi.

Boys’ hockey— Pool ‘A’: Kakungulu Memoria (Uganda), Mang’u High (Kenya), St. Anthony’s Boys (Kenya) and Mbarara High (Uganda). 

Pool 'B’: Arusha Meru (Tanzania), Ntare School (Uganda), St. Mary’s College Kisubi (Uganda), and Musingu High (Kenya).

Netball Girls

Pool ‘A’: Andersen (Kenya), Oyugi Ogango (Kenya), Rutozo (Tanzania), St Noa Girls (Uganda), and Kawanda Senior School (Uganda)

Pool ‘B’: Bukokholo (Kenya), St Mary’s Kitende (Uganda), Mukolani (Tanzania), Buddo SS (Uganda), GS Gahini (Rwanda).
