Menengai Oilers have signed four players in readiness for the 2021-2022 Kenya Cup season set to start next month.

Last season's Kenya Cup semifinalists have recruited Homeboyz's trio of Walter Ochieng, Stanley Isogol and Mohamed Omollo and John Okoth  from Nakuru RFC to bolster their squad as they seek to win the Kenya Cup crown.

Head coach Gibson Weru said they will be going flat out to win the Kenya Cup after steady improvement in the last couple of years.

"Our goal is to go one place better than last year and win the trophy.  I believe we are well equipped to win the title based on the players form and morale. I don't see why we can't go all the way," added Weru.

The team is already three weeks in pre-season. Oilers finished third on the log with 28 points and lost to eventual champions KCB 35-17 in the semis. In the group phase, they lost to the bankers 22-19 in a tight contest in Nakuru.

Weru said the gap between themselves and the top two—Kabras and KCB is narrowing.  “If you look at our results against the two,  the gap is getting smaller. The reason we lost to KCB in the semis is lack of experience and going forward into the new season, we have decided to bring in some young established players  in our quest to win the title,” he added.

The former Kenya Sevens international playmaker said with promotion and relegation format returning, next season promises to be very competitive.

"It's good for the league because we all want to play tough games every weekend not just the semifinals. With Homeboyz coming back,  it will be good and I believe my boys will be ready for the challenge,” he added.

Weru said the team has adapted to the Covid-19 challenges that interrupted last season.  “Planning is key.  It was tough season with the disruptions but going forward we know what to do and hope to navigate the challenges,” noted Weru.
