Kenya take lead at Africa Region Four tourney in Addis Ababa

Kenya’s Michael Karanga from Kiambu Golf Club remained the best Kenyan on the course after firing one over par 143 behind Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga with two under 140.

Defending champions Kenya have overtaken former champions and neighbours Uganda in Round Two of the ongoing Africa Region Four Golf Championships at the Par 71 Addis Ababa Golf Club in Ethiopia.

In the absence of Burundi, who withdrew from the annual tournament, the five nations are playing stroke play because of the odd number of teams present.

After leading in Round One on Wednesday with nine over par 222, Uganda failed to live up to their expectations as Kenya managed to the top at (+17) 443 with Uganda in second at (+21) 447.

On Wednesday, Team Ethiopia maintained the third position with 26 over par 239, followed by Tanzania with 28 over 241.

Rwanda trailed in fifth after posting 33 over 246 but improved in Round Two on Thursday from bottom to third position in (+42) 468. They were followed by hosts Ethiopia in (+48) 474 and Tanzania, who dropped to fifth (+54) 480.

Kenya Railways' player John Lejirma moved to third position with three over par 145 as captain Dennis Maara from Limuru finished in T7 with (+15) 157 and Kiambu’s youngster Elvis Muigua concluded Round Two with T10 (+160 158.

Muigua made the team after winning the Trans Nzoia Open in Kitale while Karanga, the KAGC Series leader remains the maestro with five KAGC wins— Coronation Cup (Nakuru), Sigona Bowl, Windsor Classic, Muthaiga Open and Railway Invitation.

Lejirma won the Marshall (Njoro) while Maara won the Winston Churchill title at Thika Sports.

Nsubuga has been playing in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series and starts favourite in the third round of the 74-hole tournament.
