Kenya Railway's golfer George Felix and Muthaiga’s Jeff Kubwa are targeting the Safari Tour Golf Series at Rea Vipingo-Ridge at the end of this month as they prepare for next year's Kenya Open.

Felix, who beat Kubwa to win the inaugural Linda Maji Mtaani Pro-Am golf tournament at the par 71 Eldoret golf club over the weekend, said they will be at Vipingo from November 26-30 ahead of the 2023 Magical Kenya Open.

The duo faced off in the professional tournament on Sunday.

Felix revealed that he has really improved on his swing and was looking forward to battling for the crown in one of the most competitive professional series.

“Right now, I am performing well in swinging and putting, which has been a challenge for me in the past. What is needed is little to make it to the top,” he added.

Kubwa, who returned to his home club of Eldoret where he was brought up, said that professional golfers need more sponsorship to compete with the rest of the world.

“Many corporates have concentrated on juniors and amateurs forgetting that professionals exist in the country. After sponsoring juniors, they turn into amateurs but after amateurs. This is tricky considering professional golf is the ultimate yet there are no tournaments,” said Kubwa.

He added that the Safari Tour is in form of a series, not a tour and as such, they need more events to compete well against the rest of the world.

“We need a minimum of 18 tournaments across the country to secure our chances with the mighty golfers,” he said.

At the tournament, Felix shot six under par 136 to Kubwa's 137; followed by John Wangai.
