Junior golfer Kibugu swings to Karen Challenge Trophy title

The promising junior golfer completed the tournament with a five under-par 211, leading Nyali’s Adel Balala to the second with four under par 212.

• Balala, who was part of Team Kenya that reclaimed the Victoria Cup title in Tanzania last month, managed two over par 74 in Round One, level par in Round Two and sunk the lowest gross in Round Three at six under-par 66.

• However, it was a bad day in the office for rounds One and Two leader Dennis Maara, who finished a distant fourth with four over-par 220.

Junior golfer Njoroge Kibugu fired an impressive five under par in the last round on Sunday to win the Karen Challenge Trophy title, the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships at the par 72 Karen Country and golf club.

The Muthaiga-based golfer had sunk level par in the two rounds that teed off on Friday with level par 72 in the first and second rounds but in the third and final round, he impressively fired five under par 67 to emerge victorious in a 54-hole tournament that counts for the World Amateur Ranking.

The promising junior golfer completed the tournament with a five under-par 211, leading Nyali’s Adel Balala to the second with four under par 212.

Balala, who was part of Team Kenya that reclaimed the Victoria Cup title in Tanzania last month, managed two over par 74 in Round One, level par in Round Two and sunk the lowest gross in Round Three at six under-par 66.

Balala was also on Team Kenya to the Victoria Cup tournament.

Another junior golfer, Tuimur Malik — also from Muthaiga — completed the podium with two over-par 218. He managed to sink level par in Round One, two over in Round Two and then level par in Round Three.  

However, it was a bad day in the office for rounds One and Two leader Dennis Maara, who finished a distant fourth with four over-par 220.

Maara fired a whooping five over-par 77 in the last round despite having level par in Round One, shooting the lowest gross in Round Two at one under-par 71, he went deep with five over 77.
