Kamungei win Sh1.3 million in inaugural Wakili Sigei Cup in Bomet

Sigei said his objective is to promote talent and expose the youth to opportunities.

A well-drilled Kamungei FC beat favourites Mogoiywet Snippers 4-3 in post-match penalties to win the inaugural Wakili Sigei football tournament at Bomet IAAF Stadium on Friday.

The two teams fought for a barren draw in regulation time to force the match into penalty kicks.

The winners converted the penalties through Anderson Kipyegon, Davis Kiprono, Felix Kimutai and Duncan Kipngeno while Clinton Kipchirchir missed his penalty.

Mogoywet scored through Collins Kiprotich, Gideon Bett and Evans Kosgey as Bernard Terer and Diaz Mutai failed to convert. Kapsimbiri FC won the third position play-off after edging Chepkolon FC 2-1.

The tournament, sponsored by Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei, saw the winners pocket Sh1.3 million with the second-placed team taking home  Sh700,000. The second runners-up received Sh250, 000 with the fourth walking away with Sh100,000.

The event attracted 439 teams drawn from the five sub-counties of Bomet County from the preliminaries that started in November last year.

The best team at the ward level pocketed Sh20, 000, runners-up Sh15, 000 and the third-placed Sh10, 000. The best four teams in the 25 wards got playing kit. 

The best teams in the sub-county level were given Sh35,000 while the second and third pocketed Sh30,000 and Sh20,000 respectively. Sigei said he is committed to nurturing the talent in the county.
