KBC acquires free-to-air rights to Africa Cup of Nations

National broadcaster Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) has acquired free-to-air rights to the Africa Cup of Nations that is set to start this weekend in Ivory Coast.

"We are delighted to join hands to bring the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations LIVE to the people of Kenya," Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba said.

"KBC is a premium brand, govt will do everything to support this brand. Mafans wa soccer, this is it, you don't have to struggle to watch your favorite football stars. Just tune in to KBC Channel 1 LIVE."

KBC acting Managing Director Paul Macharia said, "Our sports calendar has interesting events this year. KBC will also broadcast Caf Champions League, Caf Confederation Cup, Women's Afcon 2024, Caf Women's Champions League, and the qualifiers for Afcon 2025 among others."

A total of six world-class stadiums spread across five host cities will play host to the 34th edition of Africa’s biggest football tournament between January 13–February 11.

The news come just two days after Pay Television StarTimes acquired the rights to air the biennial event. 

Jimmy Carter Luo, the CEO of StarTimes Media Kenya, expressed his enthusiasm during the announcement, stating, “We are delighted to announce that StarTimes has secured the broadcasting rights for Afcon 2023, representing a significant milestone for the company as we continue to bring the best in sports entertainment to our viewers.”
