Gor Mahia’s mercurial striker Benson Omalla has hailed his teammates for playing their hearts out this season.

Omalla said their ‘champions mentality’ during matches has fuelled their resolve to reclaim the title they cracked last season — their 20th overall.

“The morale in the camp is amazing and everyone is doing their best to add value to our campaign,” Omalla said.

“The most exciting part is that we have already developed the champions mentality and this is key in achieving our target. There is enough depth in the squad to successfully contest for our 21st title,” Omalla quipped.

The sensational forward spoke a day after K’Ogalo brushed aside a vicious challenge to pip fellow behemoths Tusker 1-0 at Moi Stadium, Kasarani in one of the most thrilling encounters of the season thus far.

His diving header was all it took to separate the sides at full-time time even as his goal tally rose to seven this season, placing him strategically ahead of the Golden Boot-chasing pack.

The magnificent goal came hot on the heels of a brace he netted in the Mashemeji derby thriller against bitter rivals AFC Leopards three weeks ago.

Omalla vowed to burn more holes in the net on his way to the top scorer’s gong that eluded him in the preceding season.

“As a striker, I’m assigned to score as many goals as possible. That’s my main agenda on the pitch. I’m thrilled by what I have accomplished to date, and I’m looking forward to more goals in the upcoming fixtures,” Omalla remarked.

Omalla will be eager to emulate his masterstroke performance last season when he came close to tucking away the Golden Boot award, only to lose out to Elvis Rupia who netted 27 goals.

But even as he frantically pursues his ambition, Omalla said they are all out to embellish Gor Mahia’s trophy cabinet with another major silverware this season.

“At the end of the day, we are intent on clinching the league and I’m glad we’ve had a brilliant campaign up to now. We remain focused on winning every single game to boost our chances of retaining the title,” Omalla added.

Gor are currently placed second on the log with 15 points, one behind leaders Posta Rangers who endured the bitter pill of their first-ever defeat this season after crashing 3-1 to FC Talanta.
