Eight teams will on Sunday battle it out for the Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza Regional final at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

The eight teams booked their slots after the inter-county play-offs staged at Rongo Showground and Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay over the weekend.

In the boys’ category, Obunga FC from Kisumu, St Peter's Wagai (Siaya), Nyaguku FC (Nyamira) and Awendo Academy will face off.

In the girls’ category, Nyakach Girls, popularly known as Plateau Queens, Victoria Sports Academy, Ageng’a Girls, and Kisii Queens will battle it out for the slot for nationals.

Obunga and Ste Peter’s Wagai sealed places in the regional finals during an inter-county competition played at Raila Odinga Stadium.

Kisumu’s Obunga FC edged hosts Karabondi FC, popularly known as the Dark Horse, 1-0 courtesy of a splendid strike from Duncan Odhiambo in the 40th minute.

Karabondi suffered a 2-0 loss against St Peter’s Wagai in the second match while in the third game, Obunga FC and St. Peter's Wagai played to a goalless draw of 0-0, resulting in both teams qualifying with four points each.

“After winning the county finals, we knew we still had a significant task ahead of us to reach the regional finals, which will be happening in a few days.

"Playoffs are not easy, as every team gives its all to make it to the next level. Today's games were really tough, but I am glad my boys took them seriously, giving their best to earn us a ticket to Kisumu for the regional finals," said Obunga FC head coach Amos Ochieng.

In the girls’ category, national reigning champions, Plateau Queens, stamped their authority after winning both their matches against Ogande Girls (Homa Bay) and VSA girls (Siaya) to finish first in their group.

In their early morning match against the home team, Ogande Girls, the unstoppable Plateau Queens won by 3-1.

The three goals were scored by Swaumu Masungo, Maureen Atieno, and Emilly Morang’a.  Mercy Achieng netted a consolation goal for her team, Ogande Girls.

Plateau Queens narrowly beat VSA Girls 1-0 with Swaumu Masungo scoring the crucial goal, to place Queens at the top of their group with six points.

Ogande Girls suffered yet another 3-1 defeat against VSA Girls from Siaya, sending them home.  VSA Academy was, therefore, second in the group and qualified for the Nyanza regional matches.

Elsewhere on Saturday, another exciting inter-county playoffs were held at Rongo Show Ground in Migori County, where Ageng’a Girls topped the girls' category with four points after defeating Rigoma (Lowlands) Starlets 3-0 and drawing with Kisii Queens 0-0.

Kisii Queens finished second after winning their second match 2-1 against Rigoma Starlets. Rigoma dropped from the competition after finishing last in the group.
