Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry has urged his charges to keep the momentum going following their huge win against Kenyan Premier League rivals Nairobi City Stars.

The record Kenyan Premier League champions jutted out their talons to register a resounding 4-1 over their opponents at Moi Stadium, Kasarani on Sunday.

Kennedy Onyango, Benson Omala, Ronney Onyango, and Austin Odhiambo all scored a goal apiece to seal the victory that fired K’Ogalo to second.

“We had a brilliant day in the office and I must laud the great effort the boys displayed in this match. We deserve the win,” McKinstry said. “This is a morale-boosting result heading into our match against Kakamega Homeboyz at Bukhungu Stadium on September 27.”

City Stars head coach Nicholas Muyoti expressed disappointment at the loss but said he was still in the process of rebuilding the club after a mass exodus of dependable players.

“It’s unfortunate that we conceded so many goals and this is something we should try, as much as we can, to avoid. There are times leagues are won based on goal differences,” Muyoti said. “We simply fell short of expectations in today’s match. The majority of the players have not been together for long and we expect to yield better results as soon as the squad members gel.”

Muyoti said he expects an improved performance in their subsequent fixtures.

“We need to work on some key areas before our next match, against Nzoia Sugar at Sudi Stadium next Saturday,” he said.

The outcome left Gor second on the log with seven points, same as leaders Posta Rangers, who enjoy a healthier goal difference.

The mailmen rose to the apex of the log with an emphatic 3-1 win over Sofapaka at Kasarani Annex.

Jackson Macharia broke the deadlock just five minutes after the restart. Former AFC Leopards offensive midfielder Peter Thiong’o then scored two quick-fire goals in the 70th and 73rd minutes to seal to put the outcome beyond doubt.

Sofapaka secured a consolation through Oliver Maloba in the 77th minute.

Elsewhere, an obstinate Talanta side handed newbies Murang’a Seal their first defeat in three matches with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Kasarani Annex.

Kariobangi Sharks stunned KCB 2-1 at Utalii grounds.
