Siaya County Governor James Orengo has promised to support Nyamira Girls' preparation after their qualification to feature in the World Secondary School Games on April 19-29 next year in Belgrade, Serbia

Nyamira defeated Uganda’s Kakungila Girls 2-0 to win the hockey title during the East Africa Games held in Rwanda last week. The school also produced the best player and emerged as the most disciplined team.

The team captain Vivian Akinyi said: “We had fewer  records of green cards that saw us declared the most disciplined team.”

The games, which ran from August 18 -26, saw Nyamira beat six teams including Tigoi, Berajangi, Gayaza, St. Joseph Kitale, and Namagaya on their way to the title.

While receiving the trophies from Nyamira Girls, Governor Orengo said the team’s effort had placed Siaya on the regional and world map

Orengo said his government will see to it that they support modalities that enhance the team’s preparations ahead of the Belgrade trip.

“We are going to improve the girls' hockey field with the aim of ensuring they are fit and skilled to compete with other formidable teams in Belgrade, Serbia,” said Orengo.

He added, “We are also reaching out to other partners to ensure the girls are well-kitted.”

Orengo’s administration had fully kitted the team ahead of the regional games and that boosted the morale of the players.

Sports assistant director and Kicosca chairman, John Ang’awa thanked the team for flying Siaya County’s flag high in the East African region. “We are celebrating sports victory here in Siaya and I am proud to be associated with girls' performance,” said Angawa.
