Starlets move up in latest Fifa world rankings

The Starlets are scheduled to be back in action next month at the qualifier for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations set for Morocco next year.

In Summary

• This comes despite the Starlets not having participated in international football since February 2022 when Fifa suspended the country due to government interference in football.

• Meanwhile, Nigeria and South Africa are the only African teams in the top 50. Nigeria are 32nd while South Africa are 45th.

Harambee Starlets have moved one slot up in the latest Fifa women's rankings, conducted following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.

This comes despite the Starlets not having participated in international football since February 2022 when Fifa suspended the country due to government interference in football.

They have, however, retained the same number of points, 991.78, from June 9.

The Starlets are scheduled to be back in action next month at the qualifier for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations set for Morocco next year.

These two-legged encounters are set to take place between September 18 and September 26, with the first leg being played away from home.

The winner of the two-legged fixture on aggregate will play Gabon or Botswana in the second round after which the winner gets automatic qualification for the tournament in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Nigeria and South Africa are the only African teams in the top 50. Nigeria are 32nd while South Africa are 45th.

Morocco are ranked 58th with Zambia 69th. Tanzania and Uganda take positions 151 and 155 respectively.

Morocco began the World Cup finals as the second-lowest ranked team but progressed from their group at the expense of Germany.

Sweden top the list with 2069.17 points followed by world champions Spain, who have 2051.84 points.

2019 champions USA started at number one but after being knocked out by Sweden in the round of 16, they have dropped to third while 2023 World Cup runners-up England take fourth place.

The Fifa World Ranking is a points-based system that takes into account all senior international matches played by a national team over the course of four years.

A team's total number of points is calculated by adding the average number of points gained during matches in the last 12 months to the average number of points gained from games older than 12 months (which depreciates year-on-year).

As well as being used to chart the progression of national teams, the rankings have been used in seeding teams in World Cup draws as well as during the qualification stages of the World Cup.
