Kenya's Shanderema faces baptism of fire in FEASSA opener

The 20th edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) games get underway in Huye, Rwanda on Saturday.

Kenya’s Shanderema make their debut in the regional showpiece against Rwanda’s Ecose Musambira at 3 pm at Huye Stadium.

Only one game will be played on the opening day of the 10-day showpiece. Kenyan teams arrived in Rwanda on Thursday night.

In matches scheduled for Sunday, Kenya’s six-time champions St Antony’s Kitale returns to familiar territory when they face Rwanda’s other representatives CGFK while former champions St Mary’s Kitende from Uganda will be up against Kiwira Coal Mine of Tanzania.

Tanzania’s other representative, Kalangalala Secondary, will face St Henry’s Kitovu from Uganda. Shanderema will face Amus College from Uganda in their second game.

Five games are lined up in boys’ volleyball with Kenya’s Andersen opening their campaign against Standard High from Uganda. Kenya’s other representative, Tumaini, will tackle Namugongo from Uganda as Tanzania's Kaliua and PSVF (Rwanda) face off.

GS St Joseph's from Rwanda and Bukedea from Uganda will conclude the day's matches.

In the girl’s category, regional powerhouses Kwanthanze start their title defence against GS St Alloys from Rwanda as Kenya’s other representative, Mwitoti, play Nasuli Secondary from Tanzania. IPRC Kigali will collide with Ngora from Tanzania as Soweto (Kenya) battles it out with Seroma Christian High School (Uganda).

In boys’ handball, Rwanda’s Adegi will host Kilombero from Tanzania while Kenya’s Mbooni will be up against Bombo Army Senior School from Uganda.

In the girls’ category, Moi Girls Kamusinga and Kibuli Senior School will collide in the opening game.

Namagunga and Kakungulu Memorial, both from Uganda will battle it out in another duel.

Athletics will be staged between August 24 and 26 at UR Huye while swimming will be held at GSOB on August 23-24. Stade Kamena Hall will host table tennis between August 20 and 24.

Badminton and lawn tennis will be played at UR Huye between August 20 and 24 while TTC will host rugby 15s and 7s from Sunday. Basketball, handball and netball will kick off on Sunday.
