Kakamega County Government has set aside Sh10 million for the Governor's tourney set to run between August 26 to  January  1, 2024.

The event is the second edition of the Governor's Cup and it will be used to identify and nurture talent in the county.

The event, which will be conducted in three phases, seeks to promote sportsmanship, social cohesion, and healthy living in the county.

In a press briefing at Bukhungu Stadium yesterday, the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Sports, Mophat Mandela, said the tournament will feature football (men and women), rugby (men), netball (women) and volleyball (men and women).

The registration will take place from July 1-31 and will be followed by ward competitions from August 21-27.

The ward stage will be preceded by the sub-county contest before the penultimate county bonanza that will take place from December 28 to January 1, 2024," Mandela explained.

He further said the tournament is aligned with Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa's social development pillar that seeks to develop a database for sportsmen and women with an aim of tracking them in addition to exposing talented ones to the sports market.

"As a county, we are ready and we want all interested teams to register for this tournament since it is an activity aimed at promoting sportsmanship, talent development, social cohesion, and healthy living," Mandela said.

The CECM revealed that there will be no age limits, and the only qualification is to be a resident of Kakamega county with the exemption of the players involved in Division 2, Division 1, the National Super League, and the Kenya Premier League.

“We have special plans for those teams participating in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) leagues and, therefore, we shall not have them taking part in the Governor’s tourney,” said Mandela.

He also promised to enhance the networking of the tournament's football players by profiling them on Fifa Connect to ensure the exposure of the teams to the outer market.
