KPL club rush to acquire women's sides as per CAF regulations

Over the weekend, Kenya Police announced the acquisition of former Kenya Women Premier League side Thika Queens.

Kenyan Premier League clubs have started acquiring or partnering with women’s teams in compliance with CAF’s circular directing clubs participating in continental competitions to have women sides.

Over the weekend, Kenya Police announced the acquisition of former Women's Premier League champions Thika Queens.

Other clubs including record Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia, Kakamega Homeboyz and Tusker are in the process of acquiring women’s teams.

“The management and Board of Trustees of Kenya Police FC and the management of Thika Queens FC are pleased to announce a significant development in Kenyan football,” Police FC said in a statement.

They added in a statement: In a mutually beneficial agreement, Kenya Police FC acquired Thika  Queens Football Club forging a new era of collaboration and growth of women's football in the country.

They termed the partnership as groundbreaking and marks an exciting chapter in the history of both clubs.

“The two clubs, have come together to foster unity, inclusivity, and enhanced opportunities for players, staff, and fans alike. The primary objective of this partnership is to empower and promote women's football in Kenya," the statement added.

Thika Queens FC has been at the forefront of women's football, consistently delivering outstanding performances and nurturing young talent where some have gone on to play for both junior and senior national women’s teams.

The club has produced some players like Mwanahalima Adam and Essey Akida who have gone on to play professional football outside the country.

“With the support and backing of Kenya Police FC management and Board of Trustees, we believe Thika Queens FC will gain further momentum, expanding its reach and impact on the national and international stage. Both clubs wish to express their gratitude to their respective fans, sponsors, and stakeholders who have stood by them throughout their respective journeys,” the two clubs added in the statement.

The managements of the two clubs reiterated their commitment to fostering a seamless transition during this integration phase that will ensure a smooth merging of operations.
