Sfapaka head coach David Ouma has praised his charges for overcoming fierce opposition to decorate their cabinet with a silverware after a long wait.

The 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions rallied from behind to beat AFC Leopards 4-3 on penalties following a one-all draw in regular time at Nyayo Stadium on Monday.

A brilliant effort by Washington Munene in the 15th minute fired Leopards into the lead from the spot before Rody Manga restored parity late in the game to send the match into a shoot-out.

Ouma said the success has increased their confidence as they continue to charge for the Kenyan Premier League title this season.

"It comes at a time when the boys needed something to boost their confidence. Now our eyes are set on the topflight title," Ouma said.

Sofapaka's victory against Leopards has demonstrated their ability to win the title, he added.

"It was a tough match and our opponents were determined to beat us. I thank the boys for fighting bravely. It's the kind of spirit we hope to see in our future work," Ouma said.

Ouma said he hopes all his players who are out with injuries will recover in time to strengthen the squad.

"Considering the challenges we are facing now, I believe we are doing a great job. We have not been able to include some of our best players due tosome unresolved issues. We also have several players who are still out with injuries and we hope they will be back on the field soon."

Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems said he has seen improvement in his team despite the loss.

"Compared to what I saw in the last three matches, I must congratulate the team for a good performance. We just had a bad day at the office," he said.

Both teams earned a vital league point each from the match.

Before Monday's match, Leopards had played twice this season. They beat Ulinzi Stars 2-0 in their opener before falling 1-0 to champions Tusker.

Sofapaka came into the competition looking for their first win of the season, having recorded two losses against - Bandari and Nzoia Sugar - and registering a goalless draw against Posta Rangers.

The Sofapaka vesus AFC Leopards match was played to conclude the Jamhuri Day celebrations held at the venue earlier on Monday day.

In another KPL match, Kenya Police and visitors Bandari drew 0-0 at Moi Stadium, Kasarani.
