Tusker head coach, Robert Matano, has exuded confidence ahead of the new Kenyan Premier League season after roping in seven new signings.

Speaking while unveiling the players at the Ruaraka grounds on Wednesday, Matano said he was crossing his fingers for a flying start to their title defence after bolstering his workforce.

“We have strengthened all the departments in the team. The players joining us have been meticulously picked to help us defend our title successfully,” Matano said.

He admitted they are under the pump to replicate their exploits from the two preceding seasons, where they bagged back-to-back Kenyan Premier League titles.

“It's normal for people to expect a lot from us after we successfully defended our title last season,” Matano said.

“Our opponents are equally busy recruiting new players, so we expect a cut-throat competition in the new season.”

Fullback Boniface Onyango, centreback Thomas Teka and forward Eric Mata have joined from Kariobangi Sharks.

Others are custodian Brian Opondo acquired from Bidco United, forward Erick Otieno (Wazito) and 18-year-old David 'Daddy' Odoyo roped in from lower-tier side Green Commandos.

The brewers have also promoted bulky defensive midfielder Collins 'Ngolo' Otieno, 18, from the academy side.

Matano regretted that their last two consecutive campaigns got off to a torrid start, and has promised to rectify the disturbing pattern.

“We have been losing our opening matches for the past two seasons, so we don't want to repeat the same mistake. We must learn from the past and make the necessary changes,” Matano said.

The seasoned tactician said he is impressed with the progress of his charges in training thus far.

“We are doing well, and I'm happy we are gradually raising a full team because, besides the new signings, some of our injured players are also back in training.

“The spirit and the commitment in camp are amazing. We need to keep on winning matches to boost our confidence. We are keen to identify any areas we need to work on. We have polished our defence and the midfield and we are also happy the goals are now coming,” Matano said.

The brewers' backline was left badly exposed following the departure of star players including former skipper Eugene Asike and Christopher Oruchum who partnered in the central defence.

Tusker upset the formbook in the 2020/2021 season to halt the dominance of traditional giants, Gor Mahia, who had laid claim to four consecutive titles beginning in 2017.

Meanwhile, the brewers have received a brand new team bus from sponsors Kenya Breweries Limited.

Speaking while presenting the new bus, Tusker brand senior manager Kilel Chepkemoi hailed the team’s performance last season.

“As the Tusker brand celebrates its 100 years of existence, we also celebrate this great club that has been present for many years,” said Kilel.

“We remain committed to supporting the team as they continue to prepare for the next season and we are confident of yet another successful season,” he added.

The team will be heading to Mombasa next week as it kicks off its pre-season training ahead of the new season.
